This painting is a deeply personal exploration of my own space, specifically capturing the unrivalled safety and warmth found within the confines of my bedroom. It is far more than a simple portrait; it is an attempt to record a sacred state of being and the profound tranquillity achieved when the external world is muted, leaving me alone in soft self-communion, fully protected.
I consciously moved away from hyper-realistic rendering, prioritising the reference picture’s mood over visual accuracy. My process focused intensely on the undertones of the palette. These hidden layers are crucial to generating the emotional temperature of the piece. The rich pinks and deep siennas are built up, creating a sense of three-dimensional depth and warmth that mirrors the feeling of sinking into the ultimate protection of plush bedding.
The final result is less a photograph and more a captured mood. The focus is entirely on the luxurious weight of quiet contemplation and the sense of security, which is amplified by the use of saturated yet soft complementary colours. By allowing these foundational hues to dictate the overall temperature of the piece, I invite the viewer to not just look at the figure but to feel the comfort, the silence, and the unbreakable personal safety I experience in this room. Ultimately, this work is a tribute to the bedroom as an essential sanctuary.
